"Wake up, Jenny!" yelled Karyn.
"Wha ... what? How long was I out?"
"Just a few seconds. You look like you saw a ghost."
"Karyn, do you remember the magic stone?"
"Magic stone? Don't you think that's something pretty unusual for me to have forgotten?"
"Yeah, but ... oh, never mind. Help me get it, okay? I saw it there under the vending machine."
"Sure, but I don't see what's wrong." Karyn ran to her locker and came back with a foldable umbrella, which she stretched out but didn't open up. It made a nice pole to extend Jenny's reach a little bit farther.
And in a minute, Jenny had retrieved the stone.
"Is that really it?" asked Karyn. "It's just a smooth piece of rock. It's nothing special."
"It's the fake stone," said Jenny. "I don't think the real one is that smooth. But I'm going to have to demonstrate. I wish I was holding a cheeseburger," she said. It was a simple enough wish that would prove once and for all to Karyn that the stone was indeed magic. But for some reason, the stone didn't glow and a cheeseburger didn't appear in Jenny's hand.
"Magic stone, huh?" Karyn said. "Yeah right."
"It should have worked." Why didn't it work?
What Jenny didn't know was that the stone would only grant wishes to Jon. But since Jon no longer existed (Jon had become Jenny), the stone couldn't function properly. It was now essentially a normal stone, with no magical properties. Unless Jenny got her hands on the stone that was stolen from her, she'd be stuck as Karyn's sister for the rest of her life. But who took it and where was it now?
"Listen, Jenny. I need to get to class," Karyn said.
