After someone was covered in it (like Jon and Karyn just were), the slime caused them to become "lightning rods" for evil spirits roaming around in the vicinity. And only a moment later, Karyn became the first "victim".
One moment, she was just talking to Jon, talking about how it was going to take forever to wash the slime off of her body and clothes. The next moment, the slime on her suddenly glowed bright red, before completely disappearing altogether, and Karyn dropped to the floor with a thump.
Jon's eyes went wide. What happened? He bent over his now-slimeless friend and shook her. "Karyn? Are you okay?"
