BOOM!!!
Karyn awoke abruptly from her sleep. A terrible noise had woken her. At first, she thought it was thunder, but it wasn't raining, nor was it supposed to.
She got out of bed and looked out her window. What she saw she couldn't believe. A house, a few houses down from her's and across the street, was engulfed in flames. She knew who lived there. Mr. Stokes was one of the teachers at the high school, although not one of the well-liked ones. But even so, she hoped that he and his family weren't home. But that seemed unlikely, unless they were on vacation. They weren't. There was school the next day.
Karyn grabbed her cell phone. Jon's house wasn't too far away, so he must have been awakened just like her. But when she tried to call, he wouldn't answer.
She started to get worried. Maybe something had happened to him. Ever since she found out about his wishing stone, that idea wasn't too farfetched.
She threw on some clothes and walked to Jon's house. By then, the fire department had shown up and there was a crowd of people gathering to watch "the show".
When she finally made it to Jon's house, she rang the doorbell, but no one answered. Where is he? she thought. But then she thought Where are they? Even if Jon wasn't home, his mom and sister would be. Right?
She found the spare key and opened the door. She went upstairs and fortunately found the stone in Jon's bedroom. But where was Jon?
As she walked down the hall to go downstairs, she noticed a bright flash of light from behind her. She slowly walked back and peered into Jon's room. There were four people standing in the middle of the room.
At first Karyn didn't recognize them. She thought that they may have been some of Zoe's Goth friends. But then she realized that although they looked gothic, they were in fact Jon, his mother, his sister, and Sarah McMillan.
Karyn laughed to herself. She never thought she'd ever see Sarah as a Goth. But Karyn's amusement disappeared when she overheard what they were talking about.
