The phone rang and Athena answered.
"I called everyone and told them where we're meeting," Zoe said. "We're already here. We're just waiting for you."
"I'm not coming," Athena said.
"Excuse me? Athena, we have to figure out what's happening. It's obvious that this has something to do with magic. We need your expertise to ..."
"Find someone else, then," Athena said.
Zoe paused, probably trying to figure out what was up with her friend. "Athena, what's wrong?"
"Just leave me alone. I don't want any part of your evil activities." Then Athena hung up. She sat back and reopened the Bible that she found on the bookshelf. She had never read it before, and was actually kind of getting into it. And as she did, she started to regret the type of person she was before everything changed.
The phone rang again, but she didn't answer it.
Zoe dropped the phone and turned back towards her friends. "It looks like we're on our own. Athena's more affected by the change than we thought. She actually called us evil for wanting to fix what happened."
"She said that?" Trevor asked.
"Well, not specifically, but I knew what she meant. More and more, she's becoming like those Bible-thumpers."
They all gathered around in their favorite spot in the local cemetery. It was a fairly wooded area, so they had a bit of privacy.
Zoe looked around at her friends, who all used to be Goths, but were no longer. Trevor Blake looked about as average as half the guys at school (including Zoe's brother Jon), Sabrina Johnson was just as bimbo-ish as Zoe was (a complete turnaround from her punk Goth lifestyle), Stephanie Wright was a geek with glasses and bristly hair, and Zelda Whitefield was just about as average as half the girls at school (she didn't look like a cybergoth in the slightest and there was no indication that she was one).
Trevor looked around, becoming increasingly agitated.
"Something wrong?" Zoe asked.
"I don't like cemeteries," he said. "They're ... creepy."
"You never had a problem with them before," Zoe said.
Trevor blinked. "Yeah, you're right." He shook his head. "What the fuck is wrong with me?"
"It's these new lives we have," Zoe said. "Our memories are conflicting with our new personas. We have to fight it."
"And if we don't?" Zelda asked.
"Then we become like Athena."
