"Are you a prep too?" Zoe asked over the phone.
Athena couldn't take her eyes off of the reflection in her mirror. "No," she answered her friend. "I'm ... one of those Jesus freaks. Like Nadine Ferguson." She couldn't believe that this was happening. One moment, she was making her prayers to her goddess in her normally black gothic bedroom and then the next she was making her prayers to God in her completely different religiously conservative bedroom. That was exactly how it happened too. She actually spoke her prayer to God, without even thinking about it.
"Oh god, that's terrible," Zoe said.
Part of Athena cringed when Zoe said "Oh god." But why would that bother her? She may have looked like a Christian now, but she wasn't one. "Tell me about it," she finally said. She looked at her clothes (a white collared blouse and beige skirt) and felt disgusted at the plainness of them. Her only piece of jewelry came in the form of a simple crucifix necklace. How could something like this happen to her? She was fully aware of many different kinds of spells and curses that someone like a witch could cast, but none of them could cause something like this.
"Have you talked to Zelda yet? Or anyone else?" Zoe asked.
"No. I haven't even talked to my parents."
"Maybe you should. I thought that maybe only I changed, but if you did too, maybe you're parents might be ..."
"Yeah, I got it."
"We'll meet up later, okay? I'll call you so you know where to meet."
"Sure," Athena said, then she hung up. She felt like she was in a dream, like none of this was happening. If only. She turned away from the mirror to leave her bedroom, but stopped when she saw a photo on one of her shelves ... the shelves that used to hold her witchcraft books, but now held a bunch of bible study books. In the photo, she saw herself (looking very stern and plain) and two other people. One of them was a girl she vaguely knew as Amanda Clayton, but the other was Steve "The Stud" Farber! In the photo, he looked just as serious as Athena and Amanda were, dressed in a white dress shirt, dark blue tie, and beige slacks. And no longer did he look like a stud. He looked just as thin as Nadine's friend Paul. Perhaps Steve had taken his "place"? In the background of the photo was a church. It was the Baptist church that was downtown. Maybe the photo was taken on a Sunday? Although, given what Athena knew about Nadine and her friends, it could have been any day of the week.
Athena turned away from the photo. She needed to check on her parents.
