It was The Obvious Stone. It worked just like the regular wishing stone, except that people remembered how things were before the wish was granted, whether they heard the wish or not.
The shadowy figure snuck back out of Jon's bedroom, without making a sound.
The next morning, Jon woke up, all refreshed. The previous night, he thought about what he wanted to wish for and came up with a list of at least six wishes that he wanted to try out. There was no need to bring Karyn in on this, he could just make the wishes himself. And it wasn't like she'd miss out on it anyway. Some of the wishes he had in mind would change the entire town. Karyn wouldn't even notice that anything was different.
But, of course, he was wrong about that, since what he had now was actually The Obvious Stone instead of the stone he inherited from his grandfather. Karyn would notice that things were different. As well as everyone else affected by the wish.
Choosing one of the wishes he thought up, Jon said "I wish ..."
