"But I don't want to be a girl!" said Jon.
"I told you," said Karyn, "I'm curious about how the stone can change things. When you change something it doesn't affect just you, it affects everything else. People think you were always like that. What happens if you make a big change, what else changes about your life? Do you get a new driver's license and are you friends with new people at school? Are you suddenly on the cheerleading team?"
"No," said Jon. "Besides, I don't want to be on the cheerleading team."
"Oh, come on," said Karyn. "Just put a time limit on it."
"Fine," said Jon. "I wish that I was a girl for the next two days."
In a flash, Jon transformed. He was now female. Breasts on his chest, his body shaped a little differently, and that's about it for visible changes.
"That's not a girl," said Karyn. "You look like you with breasts. What about, oh, hair, makeup, clothes, that sort of thing?"
"Hair isn't really part of being female," said Jon, "or clothes."
"But they're part of being an average female."
"Plenty of girls have short hair," replied Jon.
"Yeah, but still," replied Karyn. "Just change things to look more like you'd expect a girl to look."
Jon sat down and thought. "I wish that for the next two days, my hair would be shoulder length. I wish that for the next two days, I would know how to put on makeup. I wish that for the next two days, I'd have skirts and bras and know how to wear them. I wish that for the next two days, I'd have nail polish on. I wish that...."
After several more wishes, Karyn smiled at the new Jon. "That's better."
"I don't know," said Jon. "I feel weird. Like, I don't know, really excited. Like I'm hot for someone. I just have to...."
