Zoe walked into the kitchen and saw a girl sitting at the table.
"Who's that? One of Mikey's friends?" As far as Zoe knew, though, Mikey didn't have any girl friends. But she was right about his age.
"Who's Mikey?" her mom asked.
Zoe looked confused. "Who's Mikey? He's my brother."
"You don't have any brothers, you freak," the girl said.
Her mom turned towards her. "Michelle, please."
Michelle? Zoe thought.
The girl stuck out her tongue at Zoe. And that was when Zoe saw the piercing on her tongue.
She immediately thought about her two wishes: 'I wish I was the most popular girl at school' and 'I wish I had a tongue piercing'.
Her wishes were granted, only not to her. She turned to her mom. "Do you have a tongue piercing too?"
"Of course, I do." She showed her. "What's strange is that you didn't get one too. You had been begging to get one for a while, but when the time came, you didn't want it."
I didn't? Zoe thought. When did this happen?
Her mom looked at her watch. "You better get to school, Zoe. Jennifer's probably there already."
"Jennifer?" But then she got the connection. Jon had become Jennifer. "Never mind. I'm going."
On her way to school, she looked down at the donut-shaped stone in her hand. Apparently the shape of the stone had a lot to do with its function.
