Some time later ...
"Push!" the nurse yelled at Karyn.
She pushed as hard as she could. What was she thinking? Wishing to be pregnant? This was not what she wanted.
"Push!" the nurse yelled again.
"I am pushing, damn it!" Karyn yelled back. She pushed a little harder, and then the baby was out.
The nurse held baby Kelly up. "It's a boy."
Karyn had never felt so exhausted or relieved in her life. She looked at her newborn son and smiled weakly. Suddenly, she didn't want to wish the baby away. Maybe seeing her son had released some maternal instincts, but she decided to keep her baby.
