Since the stone that Jon now had was actually the Weakened Stone, the wishes that Jon and Karyn made didn't quite get fully granted.
Instead, the result of the first wish was that their parents wouldn't think that their absence was unusual ... at all. The result of the second wish was that they were unable to speak to one another, but that they couldn't communicate either. And the result of the last wish was almost what they wanted, but some of the most important parts of the wish were ignored. Until eight o'clock they would each turn into a random animal, but they wouldn't retain their current intellect. If they had any intelligence at all, they would really believe that they were animals. Fortunately, the time limit wasn't ignored, or else they might have remained as animals forever.
After the stone glowed, (mostly) granting their wishes ...
