Kids have few responsibilities so they can just go off and do something. There's still school and making your parents worry, but if Jon wishes himself to an island for a weekend he doesn't need to find a babysitter, and if he's abducted by aliens for a month you don't have to explain who's paying his mortgage and why he hasn't gotten fired from his job for the absence.
