The doorbell rang.
"Getting it!" Sarah called from across the house. Being on her way out, she had nearly reached the door anyway.
After a moment, there seemed to be a rather excited conversation between the cheerleader and the new arrival. Then, hurried footsteps approached. Biff, the school's star quarterback and Sarah's fake boyfriend, blundered into the room.
"You!" He said, pointing straight at me. "Jenna, is it? You're the one who stole my girl!"
Jenna? I guess it was as good a cover name as any.
"Biff?" I blurted out. Really, what else could I say? He looked more upset than I had ever seen him. I just hoped he wasn't the type to hit girls. Or mostly girls.
At this point, Sarah arrived behind him. "Biff, stop! I can explain everything!"
Biff's eyes never left me even as he spoke accusingly to Sarah. "Oh, I already know all I need to. Jenna's the reason you've changed over the last year. You don't love me anymore, and it's her fault!"
Sarah paled a bit. "Oh, Biff. I'm sorry. I did love you, but things happened. It's very complicated, and I wish I could tell you the truth."
"Wait," I cut in. "So you weren't always "
"A lesbian?" Sarah finished. "To be honest, I don't know what I am. You're the only one I'm truly attracted to, now."
Biff cringed at hearing her state her new preference so plainly.
"How'd you find out she wasn't into you?" Zoe asked Biff.
"I had my hunches for a while. She didn't act the same way she used to. She ignored me, brushed me off. I suspected she found someone else, but I couldn't place who it could be. She was very good at keeping me guessing. Then, I found a good source of information," Biff answered. "It told me all I needed to know."
"Source? It told you? What's this 'it?'"
Suddenly, my senses went on red alert. Something was very wrong, far worse than a heartbroken jock.
Biff's eyes began to glow. "It also told me how I could have my revenge."
