Haley got up early the next morning, her usual bundle of energy. She loved spending time with her humans, but she missed not having other dogs around. She was an Only Dog. Sure, there was the German Shepherd girl down the street, but she was an ice queen; all about discipline and obedience to her humans. She just wasn't fun.
One of her humans, Jon's mom, Susan, sat down at the table to read the paper. Haley could read (sort of) but it made her head hurt. Haley walked up to Susan and put her head on Susan's lap. Susan absentmindedly began to pet Haley.
"Susan?" Haley started.
"What is it sweetie?" asked Susan.
"Can we get another dog?" Haley asked. There, it was out there. "I'm lonely when you're all gone. I want someone to play with."
"Honey," Susan said. "I know you're lonely. But owning a dog is a big responsibility. I'll tell you what; I'll talk to my husband and we'll see if we can buy another dog."
Haley was so excited! She couldn't stop wagging her tail. To her, this was practically a promise that they were going to buy another dog. She hoped it would be the same species as her, but anyone she could play with would be wonderful.
