Suddenly Jon was in a different room. Or rather, in almost the same room, except it was about a third again as large, and things were arranged a little differently to fill the space. Jon looked around for dresses and blouses, and found a few in the closet, but they looked new; the tags hadn't even been removed. Everything else was his normal clothes.
The door was half open and Sarah McMillan passed by. She opened the door all the way and said, "Leah, I need that lipstick back."
Absentmindedly, Jon said "Go ahead, I don't need it," without really taking stock of his situation. Sarah entered the door, walked over to Jon's desk, and reached down to an empty spot. She put down a lipstick, then picked it up again, then said "Bye, Leah!" and left the room.
Jon stepped up to a mirror and looked for lipstick on his face. It felt normal and there was nothing there.
Then he realized: he wished to be in the family, and he wished to be treated like a daughter, but he didn't wish to ''be'' a daughter.
So he was being treated like a daughter, even though he was a boy! It seemed like Sarah's family couldn't tell that Jon was a boy. Their senses had been dulled somehow--they didn't know what they were doing! Sarah had picked up a lipstick which she had put down--but she treated Jon as if he was named Leah and had really borrowed the lipstick, even when he didn't!
Jon wondered how it could be that Sarah's family thinks he's a girl, but everyone else doesn't. Or did they?
