"Hmm," said Jonnie. "You know, we weren't going to make stupid wishes. And most of the things I can think up are stupid wishes. If we make any wishes that really fiddle with our own heads there's always the risk that while we're under the influence we're going to make some more permanent wishes. Oh, how about this. I wish that after the next time we kiss we'll mentally be straight females for five hours."
"What?" replied Jon.
"It's about as limited as possible. We're not going to fall head-over-heels in love with him and start getting reckless. It just means that this won't be like a lesbian dating a guy."
"And the part about the kiss?"
"Hold on," said Jonnie. "Joseph's coming." He was walking up to them, bringing a tub of popcorn and a cardboard tray with three sodas. When he was almost ready to sit down, Jonnie gave Jon a big kiss on the mouth.
"Wow, I'm impressed," said Joseph.
Jon stumbled for an explanation. "We just wanted to see how you'd react."
"I hope it doesn't make you lesbians. Are you sure you're okay?" Joseph kissed Jon, who didn't flinch this time. Then he looked over at Jonnie and kissed her, awkwardly.
"Now you're the one who's having trouble," said Jonnie.
"Yeah. I know you've been as nice about it as you can, but there are still two of you. In the back of my head I keep wondering how long we can make this last. And generally guys are trained not to make out with another girl in front of their girlfriend."
Jon motioned Joseph to the seat, which was between them. "Ssh. It's going to start soon." Joseph sat down and considered the identical-looking girls on each side, then took Jonnie's hand. At this point, Jon did feel slightly jealous. They were going out so he could be with Jon. Sure, Jonnie was her clone, but Jon really didn't want to share a guy with anyone. That's not how it worked between girls and guys.
Girls and guys? That's right, the wish. Somehow Jon couldn't think of herself as a guy any more. She really was female, and it felt natural. Whether she liked it didn't even come up, but she didn't want to be anything else. She no longer wanted to dress as masculine as possible as a girl--the whole concept seemed strange, and she wanted to get married and have a husband one day, maybe even to someone like Joseph. And there was no more attraction from her to Jonnie. They were more like sisters than lovers now; her memories of doing intimate things with Jonnie were things she couldn't imagine herself doing now at all. She took Joseph's other hand.
Meanwhile, Jonnie's thoughts were a little different. Going out with a guy really was familiar, since she had done it with Jon before. What changed was her perspective; instead of being a guy in a girl's body who only liked guys when it was Jon, she was an ordinary girl now. She too wanted to dress like other girls, not because it excited her, but because it would be strange not to. Her memories of being intimate with Jon were, because they were memories of a guy, still something which she could easily imagine herself doing, which means that she was in the middle of a relationship with one guy and was now with another... And she couldn't help but feel she was doing something a bit wrong. Even if Jon said it was okay to cheat on him, and even if she hadn't gotten far with Joseph anyway.
"I wish I could read your thoughts," said Joseph.
"No you don't," they both replied, almost in unison.
