Lira wasn't her real name, but that's what she called herself, and she went into hysterics when anyone called her otherwise, so even the teachers at school called her Lira to avoid one of her meltdowns.
She was rail thin and she didn't shave anything (nor did she seem to wash), and her hair was on its way to fierce dreadlocks. It was probably already too late to style it any other way though, so it might as well have been there already.
The school had also tried to make her wear more normal clothing, especially after she walked to school one day in just a pair of flip-flop sandals and her bookbag slung over her shoulder. She walked because the bus driver wouldn't let her on the bus. She tried a few times to wear a thong and pasties (definitely not a good look for her), but the school seemed intent on oppressing her and wouldn't accept that either.
So normally it was ripped and tattered skirts and dresses that showed off a lot of her skin, mostly just so that her private parts were covered so the school wouldn't complain.
And Lira was a girl to be avoided, and everyone tried their best to avoid her, even Sarah McMillan who didn't want to have to smell her or get dirty by just being near her. Those brave few who tried to get near her and introduce themselves, and who ignored her initial warning of "Stay thee away from me" usually found ignored. The more persistent usually ended up having mysterious accidents later, one of which landed a girl in the hospital with a concussion. Everyone knew Lira was the cause, but no one could quite prove it enough to get her in trouble, and those that tried found themselves in accidents themselves.
And when she did feel like being social, she would proclaim her Goddess of the Week's gospel to everyone within hearing distance, sometimes in the middle of class. Or she would walk up to someone seemingly at random and throw dust or powder of some kind at them and begin chanting what sounded like Latin, but which the few teachers who actually knew Latin insisted was gibberish.
All in all, it was amazing that the government had not yet stepped in to remove her from her parents' influence. They were worse than Lira!
So Jon wasn't too surprised when he looked down to see a pair of flip-flops and a bracelet and nothing else covering his body. What in the hell was that boy thinking?!
