... said "The password on your computer is 'jen17'".
"What are you talking about?" replied Jon, while stuffing the bag of chips in his lunch bag. "Why in the world would I use something like that as my password?"
"Because you have a fantasy of living the life of a girl, and you decided to use a password that's a female version of your name."
"Tha-- that's nonsense." Jon seemed a bit upset. Obviously, thought Jen, because she was correct. She remembered being Jon, having the fantasy, having the password, and finally making the wish that brought her fantasy to life.
"If you try it," said Jen, "make sure you don't start too young. It's very boring and there aren't really any differences between boys and girls at such a young age. Besides, while you like the idea of seeing yourself playing with dolls, being the one who plays with dolls is pretty boring."
"Did someone put you up to this memorizing that speech? You don't sound like Jen at all. You sound like someone my age."
"I'll explain, but first the password. If that's not your password, I dare you to take me to your computer and let me type it."
"Oh, for Christ's sake-- sure, Jen. Anything for my second favorite younger sister. Come on, let's get this over with." Jon took Jen's hand--suspiciously eagerly, she thought. By the time they entered Jon's room, Jen had wondered if there was something she missed. Jon shoved the door closed, and dragged Jen to the chair in front of his computer. "Go ahead, type it. And don't try any funny stuff."
The cursor was blinking on the Windows login screen. Jen typed the password. It didn't work. She cleared the entry and tried again. It still didn't work. After the third try, with Jon smirking, she said "What did you do? I know what's on that computer."
"I don't know what you're talking about, Jen. You tried to guess my password based on this crazy idea and it didn't work. And stop trying to sound like me."
"I'm trying to sound like you because I am you. I got a magic stone from Grandpa when he supposedly died and I used it to make a wish that let me travel back to January live out my fantasy. You remember me as being 8 years old but I really started as 1 in January and every time I get older you think it's always been like that."
"Now you're sounding more like yourself. Magic stones? Fantasies? Time travel? I wasn't born yesterday, you know."
"And I wasn't born 8 years ago, 'big brother'." She reached into the pocket in her pants. "I wish you'd tell me why that password didn't work."
"Because it's 'jolene17'. Wait, why am I telling you this?"
"Of course," said Jen. "My wish changed reality. In this reality, you have an 8 year old sister named Jen. You won't have the name 'Jen' in your fantasy any more if you're related to someone named Jen--you would have picked something else."
"You mean all of that stuff you said was real? I remember being at the hospital when you and Mikey were born, you mean you really weren't there?"
"Of course it's real, 'big brother'. You just made a lunch for the first day of school after spring break. I got the stone before the end of spring break. In other words, you're getting the magic stone today. Go outside. Look in the bushes. I'll be waiting."
"How do I know you won't mess with my computer?"
"I wish you'll go outside and look for the box with the stone."
Jon left the room while Jen waited. She suspected that Jon's memories included her causing trouble in his room, but then, she never really did any of that and had little reason to want to. When Jon returned with the package, five minutes later, Jen was playing a video game. Jon watched her for a few seconds, and remarked "You're awfully good at that."
"I haven't played it since before January," she replied.
"Shooting people is too violent for you. Mom will get mad."
"Oh, stop that," she said. "I think by now you know I'm telling the truth. Go ahead, open your package."
Jon opened the package. Inside was the familiar dark wood box and the familiar reddish stone. Jen held her own stone out to Jen. "See? Same stone. By the way, I wish you can't mess up my wish against my will."
"I would never...."
"I wanted to be sure."
"Jen, it's all incredible, but I believe you. I know you as my sister, but you're me. Give me a hug."
Jen stowed the stone in her pocket and gave Jon a hug while being watchful for him trying to steal the stone, but he didn't.
"And I'm not going to steal your magic stone. I have my own stone. I can use it to live out my fantasy."
"No, you're going to tell Karyn about the stone, and make a wish to live out your fantasy the night after that. You're going to become me."
"But do I want to? You just warned me not to start so young. And I'm not sure I want to do a time loop, and there's no reason to tell Karyn about the stone if I'm just going to disappear the day after. Let me think about it, once I read all the instructions for the stone."
