Jon met up with Karyn again at lunch. They didn't have any classes together this year, but at least they had the same lunch times. They usually chit chatted about TV shows and movies coming out soon but today of course, there was something far more serious to discuss.
Jon plopped down his plastic tray filled with plastic tasting food on the table and said to Karyn, "Holy shit, have you heard about Nelson Wick? Athena texted me he transformed about 20 minutes ago right in gym class!"
Karyn's eyes went a bit wide and replied, "Him too? Katie Grahm was in science class this morning with Ms. Mathis and she split part way into two people."
"Huh?" Jon said with a confused look to Karyn as he took a bite out of his square shaped fish product sandwich.
Karyn thought a bit about how to explain it before telling him, "Her upper body duplicated itself. Her head, torso, arms, etc all duplicated. Katie is now TWO people joined at the waist. Her two upper bodies form kind of a V shape coming out of her single lower body. On the way here to lunch I saw Katie have a full conversation with her other self! She had been normal when I saw her this morning."
Jon just shook his head and swallowed the nasty fish atrocity. He then sighed heavily and told Karyn, "Well, crap. After Athena texted me the rumor about Nelson I did a search on my phone and the internet is lighting up saying people are continuing to transform at the moment they reach 18 years old. I was REALLY hoping it was a stupid twitter meme or something."
"No Jon, it's not a meme, this is real and it's still HAPPENING!" Karyn said with rising panic, "What the hell are we going to do? Your birthday is this Saturday and Athena and I both will turn 18 within the next month! What if we end up incompatible?"
Jon looked at his girlfriend and put on a brave face to tell her, "Karyn. We'll get through this crap, I just know it. I will still care deeply about you and Athena no matter what happens. My parents are still together and look at what they went through! Jeff is a giant vagina and my mom still loves him. They're even trying to work out a way to communicate already. It REALLY sucks but people have been facing hardships since time began, these are just...very different. You, Athena, and I are strong enough to get through this too. We have been friends for years and the three of us have been in a relationship for the last 4 years. Some stupid changes can't alter that!"
Karyn didn't seem very moved by Jon's assurances. She just told him, "That's sweet of you to say, but you can't promise that Jon! What if you become a lacy red bra like my neighbor Sven? How will you be able to love us then? What if I become an Alligator and Athena is a robot?"
Jon just stammered, "I...I.."
Karyn continued, "I dunno, maybe things just seem kind of ok to you because all the people here in school today are still functional, it's the ones that aren't here that have major changes you should be worried about! I asked around about the absent people and found out that Julio Mendez is one inch tall. Jackie Thompson is a sow at home nursing the set of piglets she gave birth to yesterday. Amy Stevenson is some sort of penis slug creature wandering aimlessly through her house leaving a trail of cum behind her. What if THEY had all been in a relationship? How would they get through that?"
Jon didn't have an answer for her. He just looked glum and finished eating his fish patty product.
Throughout the rest of the day Jon thought about what Karyn had said. Not knowing what the three of them would become was very scary. As Jon sat in the last class of his day, History, he saw Richard Finn and Kylie Jervis sitting one row in front of him. They were usually the couple that was constantly groping each other in the halls and talking in obnoxious baby talk. They were definitely NOT acting that way today. In fact, they had hardly glanced at each other through the whole class. Richard was directly in front of Jon and he looked normal but Jon could SMELL what his change was. Jon knew the smell from his dad Darren, who was now mostly a plant. Even though Richard's skin was not green like Darren's no doubt his reproductive system was now floral based as well.
His girlfriend Kylie on the other hand had a more obvious change. A big set of balls were hanging from her chin and her tongue was a dick now. Obviously her and her boyfriend's new anatomies had spoiled the cutesy wootsy puppy dog love they had shared only yesterday. It was amazing to see some relationships get through such amazing challenges while others simply crumbled at the slightest differences. And while Jon liked to think he and his girlfriends could weather the approaching storm, the truth was he didn't know.
