The stone flashed, telling Jon that his wish had been granted. As it was almost time for dinner, Jon would have an opportunity to see how his family had changed.
But as soon as he did that, he felt himself change. He suddenly had breasts, and there was a pocketbook on his desk. He felt an emptiness between his legs and knew he had been transformed into a girl.

So the stone made the most common form of polygamy into the norm. But half the people in the world are women. If every man married two women, they'd quickly run out of women. It wouldn't be possible without leaving a lot of unmarried men.
But if the sex ratio changed, then it would be possible after all. So now, the ratio of women to men was 2 to 1. This meant that every man could marry two women without anyone being left over. Of course it also meant that about a third of the people who used to be men were now women. And Jon was one of those.
