Jon's mom looked up at Zoe and began to say her first mean comment, as the rest of the players braced themselves for whatever harsh thing she had to say.
"Zoe, you dress like a slut. Are you trying to be one?" Zoe was a bit hurt by that.
"Mikey, you're so stupid. Why can't you be as smart as Jon?" Mikey was shocked.
"Jon, you're such a wimp. Why can't you ever stand up to bullies like a real man?" Jon never had the courage to stand up to bullies, until he got the stone, that is. He had no idea that his mom thought he was a wimp, though.
Karyn braced herself. It was time for her insult.
"Karyn, you're such a tomboy. Why don't you have any girl friends?"
That wasn't so bad, Karyn thought. Except, she was right. Karyn didn't have any girl friends. Just Jon. (At the moment, he's a girl, but after the game he'll be back to normal. Right?)
"I'm so sorry," Jon's mom said. But saying sorry wasn't going to make anything better. Her true feelings were out in the open. And she couldn't take them back.
