Jon got out of the car and surveyed the building before her. It resembled the other school building, though it looked a bit bigger. A tall chain-link fence topped with barbed wire surrounded the property. All around, students strolled about like normal, greeting friends and heading inside.
Meanwhile, Jon stared about her. It felt surreal to see that random body changes were not treated as unusual here. Most of the students seemed human enough, but here and there, she could spot a few tails and other animal features. One of the boys even had a crest of colorful feathers that stretched almost a foot and a half above and behind his head like a ceremonial headdress.
Off to the side, a school bus came to a stop and disgorged its passengers. Some of them exited through the front door. Others had to go out the back by way of a ramp. One of them, a young centaur girl with cloven hooves and a small horn on her forehead glanced over and spotted Jon. She regarded the stone girl with equal curiosity until the naga behind her urged her to get moving.
Jon figured that she had better hurry as well. As she approached the entrance, she noticed a few unusual details about the architecture. Next to the usual human-sized door, there seemed to be a very tall open garage-style door. Its purpose became obvious as a girl easily twice the height of an average person strode in, hoisting a backpack the size of a small tent. Behind her, another girl who supported a pair of horns that would have done an ibex proud also took advantage of the added headroom.
Upon entering the school, Jon found herself surrounded by a fantastic menagerie. All around, she saw creatures of myth, human-animal hybrids, and a few that could not be categorized. Due to a wide variety of height differences, the buildings interior had been expanded considerably, making it look more like a train station than a high-school.
For some time, Jon stood there , trying to take it all in. Suddenly, a professional looking young woman carrying a clipboard stepped up to Jon and greeted her. "Hello, you're Jon, right? Your mother called ahead and told us that you'll be needing an examination. We also have some paperwork you have to sign so we can get you properly settled. Follow me, please."
She gestured with her free hand and adjusted her glasses with another. At the same time, yet another hand checked off something on her clipboard. Jon tried not to gawk at the woman's six arms as she followed her to the nurse's office.
