Jody was sitting in her first period english class listening to the teacher when the PA system came to life. She noticed everyone look up at the speaker in the classroom and did the same, wondering if there would be a fire drill this early in the morning.
"I wish that all the male people in the school would swap with the female people in the school."
A couple of Jody's classmates said "What the hell?" at the same time while a few others just looked confused.
And then Jody felt a strong compulsion. She looked down and grabbed the first thing she saw, her english book, and turned to her left toward Mike, the boy who sat next to her. She extended the book and he handed her his book in return, thus swapping with one of the male people in school.
While this was being repeated by everyone in the classroom, including the teacher swaping her shoes with one of the male students, another announcement came through that no one really seemed to notice amongst the confusion. "And I also wish that no one will totally freak out." Some people were swapping pencils, some were swapping books like Jody and Mike, and one girl had swapped her watch with the boy in front of her and was now examining how her wrist looked with the boy's watch she now wore.
Jody kind of heard the second wish but was more interested in her new english book. It was so strange that this book used to be Mike's, but now it was hers while he had her old english book.
A general buzz started up as people began discussing what had just happened and then another voice came over the PA system.
"Jon? What the hell was that for?" Jody recognized her friend Karyn's voice quite clearly. "Give me that, you asshole!"
Everyone in class stopped talking and looked back up at the speaker as a scuffle was heard. Karyn's voice was heard a few times but no one could make out what she was saying, and the other person's voice came through as well a few times with a clear "...just thought it would be funny!" just after the scuffle began.
Jody looked at the door when she heard people in the hallway and then got up to investigate. Besides, Karyn was involved in this somehow, so she wanted to get to the office to find out what was going on.
She managed to beat everyone else to the door of the classroom and joined the crowd. They were all headed in the general direction of the office. When she rounded a corner she saw a boy wearing a skirt arguing with a girl who was wearing a top that looked like it would match the skirt. She heard him say "No, it's mine now, we swapped!" as she passed them. She didn't stop however since she wanted to get to the office to try and help Karyn.
Only a short distance away she found there were only a handful of people congregating around the office door. She looked for any signs of other swaps but didn't see anything as dramatic as the boy with the skirt in this small group. She just hoped Mike wouldn't want the book back. If he had written any notes in it she would be happy to let him copy them, but it was HER book now. They did swap afterall!
