"I just wanted you to go out with me," said David. Then there was an expression of puzzlement on his face, as if he had forgotten what he said, which needless to say he did.
"Oh, yeah, Jon... since we know you and Karyn aren't even near being an item, I'd like us to go on a date. What do you say?"
Jon had known David for some time, ever since they were kids, but he wasn't a close friend like Karyn. It had seemed strange that David insisted he was a boy, since for all everyone knew he could be a girl with a boy's name, a skirt, and an active imagination. Until puberty, when it became obvious that each half of his body was developing differently and his top half was male. But even after that, Jon had never thought of David as a potential significant other.
Nevertheless, Jon found himself saying "Of course I would." The wish didn't give him a choice. At least it was just a date; he wasn't being forced to get extremely intimate with David.
David grinned. "Hey, you finally said 'yes'."
