Jon pushed the big red button again. Karyn looked again, but still didn't see any new changes.
"I don't get it!" Jon exclaimed, his hoops earrings tinkling as he shook his head. "Why would the stone create this thing and then not it not do anything? Are your sure it didn't do anything when you tried it?"
"Um..." Karyn thought hard - she knew it had changed something about Jon, but the memory of exactly what was getting fuzzier. "Maybe it did," she admitted, then added (truthfully) "But I really can't tell for sure."
Jon scowled at the device. Pointing it at himself, he punched the button several more times, the way some people do with a TV remote with weak batteries.
Finally, Jon gave up. "If it's doing something, I can't tell it," Jon sighed.
"Yeah, if it did anything, it was probably minor," Karyn said. "Let's just put it in your purse for now and we'll worry about it later."
"Sure," Jon said, storing the device away, then pulling a compact mirror out of the purse for a quick check. "Karyn, does my makeup look okay?"
Karyn shook her head. "Jon, your makeup always looks okay. I'd worry less about that than what you're wearing. You know Mrs. Treadigar doesn't like low-riders."
"Mrs. Treadigar," Jon sniffed, "Isn't my mother. I look totally hot in these jeans, and if I wanna wear 'em, I can."
"Okay then. So shall we go back to your place and try out the rock after school, or do you wanna hit the mall first?"
"The mall!" Jon said, snapping the compact closed. "I'm almost out of that plum eyeshadow. Plus, I hear Rossdale's is getting a shipment of bikinis in, and I really need a new one to wear this summmer!"
"Jon, you've already got a dozen! How many different bikinis does a girl need?"
"I dunno," Jon said, "How many different boys are there out there?" With that comment, the two girls entered their homeroom giggling and laughing
