Jon walked into the bright lights of the mall and glanced around the food court. He was supposed to meet Karyn, but he was running a bit late and he figured she'd probably already gone into one of the stores. Jon started walking towards The Gap, hoping to find her, when he heard a familiar voice.
"Jon? Jon Madison, is that you?"
Jon spun around to see Pete Roberts standing there.
"Pete! What are you doing here?" Jon asked.
"We just moved back into town. My dad got yet another transfer." Pete had been one of Jon and Karyn's best friends in elementary school. Pete grew up right next door to Jon, but he moved away when they were in the seventh grade.
The two of them walked to a nearby bench, where they sat and caught up with each other.
"Sorry about that," Pete said upon hearing that Jon's grandfather had died. "He was a pretty awesome guy."
"Yeah, I know. Look, there's something I want to show you. So far I've only told Karyn about it, but I trust you with this secret too. When my dad died, he gave me this." Jon pulled the box containing the stone out of his pocket and opened it up to show Pete. He handed him the note inside, which Pete read.
"You've got to be kidding me, man," Pete said. "I mean, I knew your grandpa did some odd stuff, but wishes?"
"Seriously, it works. Karyn and I have already used it."
"Sure," Pete said, as he grabbed the stone out of the box before Jon could react. "This tiny rock has all the power in the universe."
"Be careful Pete! I'm serious, that thing can be dangerous."
