"Good afternoon, Master Dawkins." Karyn said cheerily.
"Good after"”" Jon began to reply before Sarah interrupted.
"Master! I'm you're Mistress, Genie, remember?" Sarah held up the lamp menacingly.
"Of course, Mistress, you are my whole world," Karyn lied, "But it is merely the custom of Genies to address all free persons as Master."
"Oh. Well, it's good you know your place, slave." It was all Karyn could do to keep calm. Sarah's constant insults were wearing on her. Why couldn't she just let the past go? Karyn was a Genie, her old life didn't matter at the moment.
"What are you doing, love?" Karyn broke out of her reverie and looked at Jon, who was staring at her.
"I haven't seen Karyn since I made her a Genie. It fits, don't you think. She was always a bit of servant, anyway. Always helping. Always obeying. Isn't that right, Genie?"
"Hmmmm, and how did you make her into a Genie, love," Sarah coyly asked. Karyn could only wonder at Jon's game as he pulled out a red ruby.
"With this, dear," He came forward and gave Sarah a kiss on the cheek and handed her the stone, like a dog obeying its owner. "Just make a wish with it."
Sarah feigned a sigh. "But I can already make my wishes come true. Why is this stone so special?"
"It is special, Mistress," Karyn quickly answered, "because I shall only grant three wishes and then I shall vanish and go to a new Master. Also, Genies are not as powerful as that stone. There are things we simply cannot do." As Karyn spoke, she saw Jon reach into his back pocket. The Genie knew he was touching the real stone. She heard him begin to whisper a wish. Karyn's eyes widened and she knew what he was wishing, and worse, she knew she had to stop him.
The thing about Genies is that they have to protect their Masters . . .
