At the top of the stairs, Jonni and Zoe parted ways, Zoe to her bedroom and Jonni to his. One went to get ready, while the other intended to fix a big mistake.
Jonni got down on his knees and dug out the box that held his wishing stone. Thankful that it was still there, he took out the stone and tried to reverse his wish.
“I wish that things went back to normal.” He paused for a moment, thinking that the stone would grant his wish, but, unfortunately, it didn’t. Jonni sighed.
I guess I need to be more specific, he thought to himself. Gripping the stone again and thinking more carefully, Jonni made his wish.
“I wish that things would go back to how they were before my previous wish.” This time, the stone did grant his wish, causing Jonni to close it his eyes. It was only after he opened them however, that he realized his mistake.
Because he had wished for things to go back to normal which didn’t work, before he made his next wish, the stone took his next wish to mean the new normal, not the old. Hearing the bathroom door open, however, made him realize he had no time to think about this more. He needed to get ready for school. He opened his closet door to ponder the options he had for clothing. There sure is a lot of purple in here, he mused. He picked out one of the four lavender dresses he had on the rack and squeezed himself into it, fumbling with the zipper. From there, he felt like getting ready was on autopilot: he did his hair and brushed his teeth. He felt he had done enough when he walked out to see Zoe waiting there.
“Jonni, you OK?” his sister asked, a little concerned. “No makeup?” It hit him like a ton of bricks. He’d forgotten something that must have been quite important!
“Slipped my mind,” Jonni fibbed.
“I’ll help since we gotta get going.” Zoe took Jonni in the bathroom and worked her magic. I will definitely need to learn all this, or wish I knew all of it, he thought, as he sat in the chair. When she was done, Jonni looked in the mirror and got a shock. His lips were black!
“Zoe, did you mean to do this?” Jonni questioned.
“No, but it’ll have to do for now, since we were in such a hurry,” she grumpily explained. Somehow put together, Jonni and Zoe grabbed their backpacks (and purses, another shock to Jonni) and walked out the door and to school.
