Once they got outside Jon and Karyn found no trace of streets, curbs, light posts, sidewalks, or any other signs of a modern city. There were no lawns or hedges either. Instead, everything seemed to be growing wild.
"So, where's this swamp with all the wonderful breakfast food?" Karen hissed.
"I wish I knew the answer to that," hissed Jon, then he led the way.
The going was slow at first but Jon and Karyn eventually got used to their snake-like locomotion. It helped not to think about it too much. For the most part, they moved with their human torsos upright and their snake tails on the ground. When they encountered a low hanging branch or some other obstruction, though, they had no choice but to duck. A couple of times Jon tried brushing such things aside and got instead a painful swat in the face. Silly me, he though; I keep forgetting I have no arms.
Karyn's coloration was bright green with a tan belly and black spots running down her back. Jon was a variegated mix of brown, black, and tan. Both, they noticed, had large fangs, two rows of teeth, and long forked tongues.
"This is it," Jon hissed once they reached a large pond surrounded by reeds, cattails, bogs, and other swamp-like features.
"Now what? Isn't this a park in our world? I don't see any restaurants," Karyn hissed.
"I don't think that's the idea," hissed Jon, then a large dragonfly flew too close and Jon instinctively snapped out his tongue and snared it.
"Ew, you're gonna eat that bug?" hissed Karyn. "How can you do that?"
"I dunno. I didn't even think about it. It isn't much but it tastes OK." Jon hissed in reply.
"Your mom was talking about bigger stuff like rats and rabbits and pigeons," Karyn hissed. "Do you suppose that's what nagas eat?"
"I guess," hissed Jon. "I guess we hafta eat a lot of them, too. These are large bodies we have now; probably a couple of thousand pounds each."
Suddenly there was a tremendous splash, then another naga rose from the water in front of them. In it's mouth was a small alligator which the naga promptly bit in half and swallowed. With a start, Jon realized it was Sarah McMillan, now a light-yellow naga from head to, uh, whatever.
"Will you two shut up?" Sarah hissed angrily. "You're scaring away all the catfish!" Then she sank beneath the inky black water and vanished from sight.
"Well, waddaya think?" Karyn hissed at Jon. "You wanna lurk in the pond like Sarah, hide in the reeds, or make like a log?"
