She rolled the die across the floor and it came up as on the side marked "Ditzy".
Karyn looked up in alarm and started to say something, but suddenly her mind went blank. "Ummm, that's so funny," she said with a giggle. "I was gonna say somethin' and stuff, but I all, like, forgot it."
"Oh wow," Jon said. "Uhhhh, what was it about?"
"Unh. Like, I dunno, silly, I told you I forgotted it."
"Wow, Karyn, you're actin' all mixed up and all. I guess the, um, the, the, the, thing or whatever, it worked, huh?"
"Huh? Oh yeah, that was it. Jon, we're all like dizzy and stuff now."
"Ummm, isn't it 'ditzy'?"
"What?"
"The word. Isn't it 'ditzy' instead of 'dizzy'?"
Karyn tried to think, but gave up after a moment. "Whatever, Jon. Anyway, we're dizzy or disty or somethin' now. Ain't that, y'know, bad and junk?"
Jon also tried to think, but he too quickly abandoned the attempt. "Uhhh - well, gosh, I don't see how. I mean, everybody else is gonna be disty now, so it should kinda be okay, y'think?"
"Oh. Okay," Karyn responded brightly with a giggle. "Hey, like, wasn't there supposed to be somethin' we was supposed to do today?"
"Seems like it," Jon said. "But I don't remember..."
"Jon!" Jon's mother's voice came from the hall. "Jon, um, which of these door things are you in?"
"Mom, duh! I'm not in the door. I'm in the room behind this door."
There was a moment's pause, and then the door opened. "Oopsie!" his mom giggled. "Hi Jon. Hi Karyn."
"Hi mom. What did you need?"
"Huh? Oh right. Ummmm, wait a second, it'll come to me - oh, yeah. Um, I think it's time for school. I think."
"Oooh, Jon, she's like right and stuff. We forgotted about school."
"Yeah. OK, thanks mom."
"Anytime, kids. Bye. I gotta go do something now. I think. Bye."
Jon watched his mother go down the hall with some concern. He knew, somewhere in the back of his mind, that she was acting all wrong, but it was hard to pin down just why.
"Ummm, Jon, like, what do we need for school?"
"Gosh, Karyn, I dunno. Let's just, I guess, go and see what happens."
"Ummm - oh. Uh, okiedokie."
Giggling and snorting, Jon and Karyn simply abandoned their backpacks and left Jon's bedroom.
