Jon and Karyn left the bedroom with their backpacks. But before leaving the house, Jon wanted to say good-bye to his mom. He always did it. But, this time, he was wondering if he really really wanted to. Everyone in town was fat, and that included his mom. Did he really want to see her that way?
He turned left, instead of right, and walked to the end of the hall. That's where his mom's bedroom was. The door was open just a bit. He pushed it open further. "Mom, we're leaving ..."
Jon stared at her. Was that really his mom? She was so thin and fit before.
"Jon, is there something wrong?"
Her voice (which seemed to not change) knocked him out of his trance.
"Yeah, Mom. I'm fine. Um. We're gonna leave now."
"Okay. You two have a good day at school." And then to herself, after Jon and Karyn left her room, "Karyn is such an attractive young girl. I hope Jon appreciates having her as a friend." Then she went back to getting ready for work.
Jon and Karyn walked down the hall to leave the house. But as they walked down the hall, they passed Zoe's room (Zoe is Jon's younger sister, by two years) and peeked inside. It would be inadequate to say that Jon was shocked at his sister's appearance. A fat Goth? Who would've thought?
After seeing that, they walked more briskly to the front door. They had to catch the bus before it left.
