"I almost don't want to go in there," Jon said, as they approached the kitchen.
"What do you mean?" Karyn asked.
"I just don't want to be shocked. What if my parents look weirder than me?"
"I thought you were fine how you looked."
"I am, but I still remember how they're supposed to be."
They entered the kitchen. There was a man reading a newspaper at the table. Jon couldn't see his face, because his back was facing Jon. But he was pretty sure it was his dad. His mom wasn't in the kitchen. She must have been getting ready for work (she worked for an insurance company). Jon's dad didn't work, in the usual sense. He was a member of a local jazz band. They did shows here and there.
Jon and Karyn walked around the table and looked at Jon's dad. Jon definitely was shocked, as was Karyn.
