"Look, there's got to be some way out of this," Karyn exclaimed, but Zoe seemed to shake her head.
"With all the backwards thinking," Zoe explained as she flipped through the almanac, "Technology stagnated in the early 21st century. Global Warming was thought to be a myth, which would explain why it's so damn hot around here. Women and minority rights were curtailed considerably. And...oh no..." Zoe looked up, her pale face echoing what she had just read.
"What is it," Karyn demanded to know.
"Jon is the Supreme Priest of the Planet. It's like being a pope in the Middle Ages, he has all the power in the world. I'd guess he made himself that after we left." Karyn looked on shocked. That was nothing like the Jon she would have questioned. Suddenly, there was a sharp knock on the door.
"Come out of their you two...freaks!" came a harsh male voice, "We know what sort of satanic things your doing in there. Give yourselves up in the name of the Lord!" Zoe and Karyn looked at each other and then made a quick move towards the window, they jumped out of the window and onto the balcony just as the cops broke through the door. They frantically went down the fire escape and ran into the parking lot, bolting through and ignoring the looks from the horrified townspeople. Suddenly a rather beatup station wagon pulled up next to them, and the door opened. Zoe and Karyn were stunned to see a platinum blonde woman wearing little more than a skirt and small T-shirt throw the door open. "Get in," she commanded, and Karyn and Zoe jumped in, as the car sped away.
Karyn stared at the woman for a good long while, before she snapped her fingers. "Are you Barbi Stevens?" she asked in a gasp, and the woman shook her head.
"No, I'm Candy, her daughter. I'm part of the Resistance."
