Having no idea where that "women can't say no" guy had taken Karyn, Jon's first thought was to make a wish using the well. He assumed there wasn't yet enough dirt in it yet to seal it off ... but that assumption was made pointless when he realized he didn't have any coins with him. He could have sworn he'd had more than the one dime he'd used for the shovels, but he pulled his pockets out and found them empty. He had originally decided to not bring the stone with him because he didn't think he'd need it, but now he realized that that was a mistake. But at least he had enough foresight to bring his cell phone.
He dialed Karyn's cell number and waited for her to answer.
Cecil led Karyn to nearly the other side of town, onto Ash Street. It was a seedier neighborhood, filled with pawn shops, run-down buildings, a strip club, and a few other disreputable establishments. Karyn's parents had always told her to stay away from this place. But Cecil said it was okay, so she went along with it.
As they walked towards a dumpy motel, Karyn's cell phone rang. She grabbed it out of her pocket and was about to answer, but Cecil stopped her.
"Who is it?" he asked.
"It's Jon," she said, sounding a little surprised and also a little relieved to know that he was relatively okay.
"Don't answer it," Cecil said.
"Okay," Karyn said, putting it back in her pocket. She could always just talk to Jon later.
"Now, come on," Cecil said, leading her into the motel.
"Karyn, pick up," Jon said. "Come on." But no one answered. The phone just kept ringing and ringing, but Karyn apparently wasn't there. Or maybe she was ignoring him. Normally, he'd never think that, but that man could make her do it.
Wherever could she be?
