"The north pole."
"What?" replied Jon.
"The north pole! The days there are a year long, six months for the daytime and six months for the nighttime. If you can change the meaning, change it to that."
"I think you've got it," said Jon. "That should work. I wish that Amanda's wish meant that she has a birthday every north pole day, which is to say, every year."
Nothing really seemed to change when Jon made the wish, but Amanda looked very relieved. "Whew," she said. "I thought I would never get free of that...."
"You don't want to go back to being six, do you? I can do that. The wish was only that you have birthdays, you don't need to be any particular age. Not that I think it's a good idea, but I've got to ask."
Amanda shook her head. "No way. I guess I'm missing a lot of growing up but when you think about it, being a kid isn't all that great. Besides, I'd have to reverse my mind to six too or else I'd go nuts in the next nine years. If I really decide I didn't have enough years of my life doing kid stuff, could you make a wish for me?"
"Oh, sure, Amanda. By the way, would you like to go out with me? To a movie?"
"Uh..." She looked puzzled, then realized. "That's right. That never really happened. Of course I will."
Jon grinned. "All right, then we... wait, what's that?"
Amanda thought for a moment that Jon was making a joke, but he looked very worried and was staring at something far away. "What is it?"
"There are enough people in the town that there are a bunch of wishes made every day just from birthdays. I fixed your wish, but that was easy. There are lots. Someone else has a birthday today and it looks like they wished for...."
