... the officer. It was the best way to solve the problem. If they just traded clothes, the officer would be in lingerie and there would be no reason for Karyn to be arrested. If the stone thought that "clothes" includes things like guns (worn on the belt) or handcuffs (worn on the hands), it was even better.
Jon swapped them, and Karyn was now wearing the policewoman's uniform, complete with gun on the belt, and the policewoman had on lingerie. However, Karyn still had the handcuffs. Well, it partly worked.
Only, there was one little problem. People thought the swaps had always been that way. Just what scenario would make someone think there's a logical reason for Karyn to be in a police uniform, handcuffed by a woman in lingerie?
"Let me go!" yelled the policewoman.
"Oh, come on," said Jon. "She's the one with the handcuffs on."
"She stole my uniform and gun and put it on without taking off the handcuffs. I don't know how she did it but she attacked me."
"You stole my rock!" said Jon. "I'll tell you what. Karyn will let you go if you give me that stone you took. Okay?"
"Sure," said Karyn.
The officer picked up the stone and handed it to Jon. No doubt she was just waiting for a chance to get her gun back and recapture her prisoners, but as soon as Jon got the stone, he saw his chance. "I wish I could make swaps even if the people I'm swapping aren't in front of me. I also wish I'm at home, Zoe and Mom are in their rooms, Karyn's with me, and nobody except me and Karyn remember anything that happened today related to the swaps, arrest, or stone."
Jon reappeared in his room with Karyn. Now he had to remember all the swaps and reverse them. A few minutes later it was done.
"Jon?" said Karyn. "I said, why did you teleport us here?"
"Huh? You didn't say that before."
"Yes I did! Back when we were on the street in front of that officer."
"Umm, Karyn, she was trying to arrest you and Zoe."
"Huh? What are you talking about?"
Jon realized what happened. Since people thought the swaps were reality, once Jon swapped them back to normal, they remembered having always been normal. If they were always normal there's no reason for Karyn or Zoe to have been arrested. "Look, it's confusing," he said. "Here's the story. I wished to be able to swap body parts or clothes. You and Zoe got arrested. You don't remember what happened because you think it was always like that."
"Oh... I'm not sure I understand..."
"And I reversed everything. You know, that's something I just learned about the stone. Past a certain point things can get so confusing you have no idea what's going on. I had to reverse things, because if I didn't, I'd have been utterly confused and made mistakes."
Karyn nodded.
"Now I'm starting again, except with a stronger swap power. By the way, I... umm... I have to word it so I'm not reversing anything... I wish that at will I can make people remember swaps. There, now I can talk to you about it without you forgetting each time I do it."
"I just don't get it. It's such a weird thing to do! A wish like that...."
"Hey, I have a magic stone. I may as well have some fun. Let's see, to use my new stronger power I don't need to have the people in front of me, so why not swap...."
