"That's not right," said Jon.
"What?" answered Karyn.
"I specifically said that I wanted leaving 'this city' to mean the city of this time, so we'll change back by time travelling too. So why didn't that happen?"
"I don't know...."
"But I think I have an idea. Have you ever seen the Matrix?"
"I know the general idea," replied Karyn. "But I've never seen it. People think they're living their lives when they're really in an artificial reality."
"Close enough. We should concentrate. Both of us. Try to see past what we're seeing."
Jon leaned against a building, closed her eyes, and concentrated. "Come on, Karyn, do it! Try to see the holes in reality. Like having a wish not do what we tell it to."
Karyn leaned against a wall and closed her eyes. Suddenly there was a shower of sparks and Karyn and Jon were standing just where they were before. Jon was holding nothing. In the distance they could see a robotic figure running away.
"We're back here!" said Karyn.
"It's what I suspected. I think that robot woke up and ambushed us, then reprogrammed us to not notice anything. Just for a few minutes. Like knocking out a person, except feeding us bad data. We might still be able to catch it."
The two female robots ran off after the pickpocket robot. The other robot paused, then made a wish....
