"You must not have the stone," said the younger Karyn. "You must have gotten here by some other method. Otherwise it wouldn't take fifteen years to get here, and you wouldn't have had so much trouble figuring out where your Jon went. You could just ask the stone."
"Yes, and?" replied the older Karyn.
"We have the stone," said Karyn. "We can find out for you, and by the way I wish your gun was a water pistol for the next hour."
The older Karyn was suddenly holding a bright orange plastic gun. Karyn's wish wasn't too soon for the older Karyn to shoot, but it was enough to save Jon; Jon only got a little wet and was unhurt. Older Karyn looked around in panic.
"Don't run away," said Karyn. "I said we'd help you."
"Wait a minute," said Jon. "Older Karyn... I guess we need to call you something."
"'K' is fine," she said.
"K, what makes you think it was really me who created your future? It could be anyone disguised as me using the stone. Maybe someone like Sarah decided to kill me and replace me in order to fool you. Or maybe it was me, but someone else was using the stone to control me. When you're talking about something that powerful, things happen."
"It was obviously you! He looked like you, he knew the things you knew...."
"And if it was someone in disguise or me under someone's control, they could still do that."
"Well, I suppose..." said K.
""K," said Karyn, why don't we start by you telling us just what bad things happened in your future?"
