"I wish for me and Jon to travel through time to the old West, as in Westerns!"

Things shimmered around them. Karyn looked away from the stone at the moment she made the wish--right at a mountain. The mountain stayed in exactly the same position, and even the sun did--they must have been in the same part of the year. But the roads had disappeared. There were more trees up the mountain before--but the dry desert visible farther down was nearly untouched. The only signs of human habitation visible were a dirt road and a cluster of wooden buildings farther down the hillside.

As they walked down, a man passed them riding along on a horse, wearing a wide-brimmed hat like that worn in hundreds of Western movies.

"Wow, a real horse" said Jon. "You don't see too many people riding thise any more. And his clothes--just like in a Western. I don't know how to ride a horse, but we could use some period clothes."

"Gotcha!" said Karyn. "I wish that me and Jon were wearing appropriate clothes for this time period, and had appropriate money."

Immediately, Jon was wearing a cowboy hat, cowboy boots, vest, and shirt. He kept his blue jeans. Karyn, on the other hand, was wearing a white cotton dress, a dull-looking skirt, and a blouse baggier than her own. It felt like she was wearing a sheet.

They walked the mile down to the town and entered the saloon. This one said "Old Mountain Saloon" on the sign above the door, and it had a fairly ordinary door rather than the swinging doors popular in Western movies.

"What'll it be?" asked the bartender.

"I'll, uh, have a beer" said Jon. "And one for Karyn too."

"We can't do that!" whispered Karyn. "We're not old enough!"

"I don't think they've invented picture IDs yet" replied Jon.

The bartender leered at Karyn and gave him two beers without any questions. Jon paid for them and then sipped at his beer,

"Ick, it's warm!" he said.

"Silly" said Karyn. "How would they refrigerate it?"

"Strange woman" said the bartender. "I've never seen a respectable woman who'd come into a saloon. Can you really stand a broad like her?" He chuckled.

Jon looked around and realized that the only other female in the place was working for the saloon. There were no women customers at all except Karyn. He laughed a little nervously--he certainly didn't want to start a bar fight by objecting to the bartender's statement.

But Karyn was a modern girl and wasn't going to just take being talked about like that. She reached into her pocket and touched the stone, saying "I wish...."
