The wind blew and Karyn smelled smoke. Well, she thought, it must be what was left of the school fire.
But then Karyn realized she smelled the smoke when the wind blew in the other direction. She couldn't see what was there, but when she walked in that direction she noticed that the elementary school was burning too!
"Oh no... my wish was for everyone to not have to go to school. So all the schools in the stone's range limit would be burning. I wish that everyone didn't have to go to school because it's a local holiday that happens to be celebrated wherever the stone has influence, not because any school is burning."
She no longer smelled smoke. It seemed that that had worked. So there was no school today.
"I wish," said Karyn, "that I was at home with my sister eating breakfast."
Things shimmered. Karyn found herself at home sitting beside her older sister Katrina and with a spoon halfway to her mouth, in which there was Cream of Wheat cereal with raisins. All in all, not a bad start.
But then things shimmered again. Karyn's sister Jenna was sitting, eating her cereal with a spoon... no, she wasn't. She just dropped the spoon and a surprised expression was on her face. "What?" said Jenna. Then Jenna took a lock of her blonde hair into her hands, and after that she felt up her own breasts, exclaiming "I'm a girl!"
"Of course you're a girl," said Karyn. "You're my twin sister."
"But you have a sister. Katrina. And she's not a twin."
"Katrina's upstairs" said Karyn. "She wanted to stay in bed, since there's no school today."
"Karyn," asked Jenna, "Did you use your stone today? You do still know we both have stones, right?"
"I don't know what you're getting at, Jenna," said Karyn. "Of course we both have stones. Who else would you give a stone to other than your twin? I just used mine to wish we wouldn't have school--it caused some trouble but I fixed it--then I wished I was home with my sister eating breakfast."
"You just... oh, no. I get it," said Jenna. "I made a wish too. You didn't hear it, but I wished I was alone with you eating breakfast. You wished you were with your sister eating breakfast. The only way for both of those to be true is for me to be your sister. Having two wishing stones is dangerous! The wishes can interfere."
"Is something wrong, Jenna?" asked Karyn. "You're talking like you're not really yourself. Like you're possessed or something."
"I'm not possessed" replied Jenna. "You don't have a sister. My name is Jon, and I accidentally wished myself to be your sister because our two wishes collided."
"You're telling me my twin sister is my boyfriend?" asked Karyn.
"We weren't like that, we were just friends."
"Oh" said Karyn. "But that's still as strange. It means my memories are wrong. And it's hard to imagine that you're really a guy. I mean, you're a guy, even though you...."
