Fortunately, that wish did work. Karyn's previous wish was to last until she said otherwise. Contradicting a wish counts as saying otherwise.

Or maybe it wasn't fortunate after all. At lunch, Jon sat down with Karyn to eat.

"Karyn," he said, "I just realized what I have to do. Can I have the stone back? Please?"

"Well, tell me if you still think girls have it easy, and I'll consider it. Otherwise I'm not giving it back until tomorrow."

"That's the point!" said Jon. "I'm a girl, but none of the other girls can see it. Even you see me as a boy and that just isn't true. In order to get everyone to think I'm a girl and for me to have a normal girl's life I need to use a wish."

"Huh?" replied Karyn. She had no idea what Jon was talking about. "Let me think about it..." She reached into her pocket to touch the stone and said, "I wish I knew why Jon said that."

Then Karyn realized that she had made two mistakes.

The first mistake was that Jon is a boy, and she had wished that all the boys in the school think that Jon is a girl. She made the wish out of earshot, so he thought he was a girl himself!

The second mistake was that the stone changes history so that things were always the way the stone made it. So Jon always thought he was a girl, and the other boys always thought that too, but the girls always knew he was a boy.

Now that was confusing. Still, she could get rid of it any time she wanted to since she put a limit on it. But did she want to yet?
