"First of all," said Karyn, "I want you to only think of yourself as Samantha. Until I say so, Jon is someone you used to be. Now you're name is Samantha."
Jon stared at his friend in disbelief. Was she serious? The look on her face told him she was. The look also told him that he'd better take her as seriously as she wanted. The last thing he wanted to do was upset her; he'd already done enough of that.
He knew that if he wanted to keep her as a friend he'd have to follow through with this order, but he wasn't sure how he would. He guessed he could go to the DMV and get his licence changed. He'd probably have to ask his parents permission for that, but maybe they'd go along with it... maybe he could ask Karyn to wish some doors open for him.
"Okay, done," he sighed, "my name is Samantha. You got it." He turned and stared at his reflection in the mirror, wondering if he'd have to change something of his self-image in order to make it stick.
"Jon," Karyn said, "Thanks for co-operating."
Jon didn't turn, but continued staring at himself. A moment or two later he realized that she had been talking to him. Wow, he thought to himself, it was working. He really didn't think of himself as Jon anymore.
"It's Samantha, Karyn. And you're welcome. Anything to get you back."
