Jon looked in the mirror. To his frustration, he couldn't see anything different about his body. In his mind he had always been a clone of Jay Duncan, the biggest geek at Jon's school. It was one of Jay's many science experiments that had created him. In this case, the cloning experiment.

Jay took his own DNA and used it to create a clone of himself, then he grew it in his lab at home. And through accelerated growth (over the course of six months), the clone (who Jay named "Jon") had become an exact duplicate of Jay himself, at least physically. Mentally ... well, that was a different story. Jay gave Jon the ability to absorb massive amounts of information in a short amount of time, thus making it easier for him to fit in with the rest of the community. (Jay couldn't very well have his clone have the body of a seventeen year old, but have the mind of a baby.) But supplying Jon with so much information so fast caused a major difference between the mind of Jay and the mind of Jon. That, and also the fact that Jon never really had a childhood, caused him to have a severely different personality than Jay. While Jay was very much into science, Jon was not. In fact, Jon seemed more interested in sports, more than anything. He was particularly interested in basketball, which Jay had no interest in.

The bottom line was that while they looked the same, they really weren't.

The Gibson family agreed to take care of Jon, as if he were part of their family. This was a way to give Jon the sense of family that he never really had before. And the Gibsons liked having him around. Especially Zoe, who always wondered what it would be like if she had an older brother.

Jay figured that Jon needed a friend too, so he asked Karyn if she would be willing to take that role. And she agreed.

But, of course, Karyn wouldn't know any of this, since her memories did not change to fit the new reality.
