"It's nothing," said Karyn. "I was imagining you'd look different, but no, you look like the same guy you've always been."

Oh, thought Jon. Little did Karyn know that Jon was really a girl. She had pretended to be a guy when they were kids. It was easy then. But now, she had to cut her hair short, bind her breasts, be careful what she wore, and imitate a masculine voice. Her face was angular enough that pulling it off was easy, and fortunately this school's gym class allowed people to play sports in their school clothes without changing.

Everyone thought she was really male except her parents, even her siblings, her guy friends, and Karyn. So of course, Karyn would look at her and say she looked like the same guy she always was. Jon had considered telling her, but now wasn't yet a good time for it.

Sometimes she wondered what it would be like to really dress and act like a girl, needless to say, but she had chosen how to live, and pretending to be a guy had advantages of its own. She liked a lot of guy things, anyway, so she didn't feel very tempted to fill her room with pink. And now that she had the rock, covering her true gender would be much easier--she could just wish that nobody suspects unless they already know.

"So what did you change?" asked Jon.

"It's a secret. Remember what I said? I want to see how a situation becomes normal. I can't do that if I tell you what it is. In fact, I wish you won't care about finding out about what it is."

"Yeah, you're right. It isn't important to know. Let's just keep on going until it wears off... how long is it for, anyway?"

"Oh, there's at least a week before it'll end, but even then it won't end until I tell it to. So let's go live life as normal in the meantime."
