"All right, Jon," said Karyn. "I'll let you stay a girl. But I'll have to make the wish fast. The five minutes should be almost done."
"Thanks, Karyn," said Jon.
"I wish that my previous wish would be permanent, rather than only five minutes," said Karyn. "There. This should count as only a modification of the wish, rather than a cancellation."
"Well, the original wish is still present. Only the time is different. We'll have to wait a few minutes to find out," said Jon. "Lets give it, say, fifteen minutes, until 8:30. That way there will be no mistaking if it worked or not."
They waited. Karyn could hardly stand the tension. Would her modification work? Was she doing the right thing by letting Jon stay a girl? At 8:30 sharp, there was no change in Jon's appearance. "It worked," Jon squealed. "I'm still a girl. Oh, thank you, Karyn. Thank you so very much. You have no idea of how happy I am as a girl!"
Karyn couldn't speak. She had permanently turned Jon into a girl. There was no going back for him (or would that be her) now.
