"I alright. But give me that stone back-"
Ignoring Jon's flustered demand, Kevin grinned. "Great! It's a date, then."
The attractive brunette that had moments ago been Jon gawked at the boy, a delicate blush coloring her face. "A-a date? Oh no. Not on your life. I just-"
"Aw, don't be like that. I just want to get to know you better. You know how it is for average Joes like us. I haven't been able to talk to a pretty girl for so long. Can't you do me this one favor?" Kevin had never considered himself an expert at the puppy-dog look, but he gave it his best shot.
The effect on Jon was profound. She sensed the manipulation, and yet, she could feel herself responding in ways she found most unsettling. "Fine. It's a date. But no promises. And no funny business. I'm not even supposed to be a girl, much less that kind of girl." Shaking her head, she remembered her first priority. "Speaking of which, I need that stone. My grandfather gave it to me, and it's too dangerous for anyone else to have it."
Kevin contemplated the object in his hand. "Well, I'm no thief, but it's your fault for dropping it in the first place. Tell you what. After we get our pizza, I just might return it to you."
"Promise?"
"You said it yourself. No promises."
Jon's pale green eyes narrowed. "I think I hate you."
"I know," Kevin sighed. "But sometimes we just have to take what life gives us. I'll see you after school."
Stumped for now, Jon turned to go.
