There was still a Jon, in a manner of speaking...still a Karyn, and still a Sarah... but they were part of a world without humans, as we would know them anyway.
Jon sat on the wall that bordered his high school. It was finally over, the first day back after spring break. He was tense, and his tail kept twitching despite his conscious efforts to calm himself down.
Jon could thank his brand new inheritance for making what was usually a stressful and unpleasant return to school even more so. He'd been worried about his mother finding it, but bringing it to school did nothing to alleviate his paranoia. If someone had raided his locker and found it, stolen it... well, who knows what would have happened.
Jon held the little wooden box in his lap, inside which his inheritance lay "“ a cold, smooth stone artefact he'd received from his grandfather. He thought of his beloved grandfather again, a traveller and archaeologist who had never quite fully retired. News of his sudden death was a bitter memory for Jon, but what had come after was...
Well, it began - and so far, ended - with this dark little stone, in its innocent little box. The note, written by his grandfather, that Jon had found when he first opened the box only raised more questions. Jon wondered if he could really still be out there, still alive. It seemed beyond belief... but then Jon never used to believe in magic either, not until he was given this artefact.
Jon spotted Karyn at the opposite end of the courtyard and waved to her as she approached. She had been his friend for the longest time and they were very close. He was sure that if he could trust anyone with this secret, he could trust her.
