Jon looked closer at the stone. It wasn't glowing now. But maybe it was all just his imagination. The stress of being fired and all that.
He gathered the rest of his stuff and was about to leave his cubicle, when he saw Joseph walking towards him.
"Congratulations, buddy," he said.
"Are you trying to be funny?" Jon asked.
"What do you mean?"
"Getting fired isn't something to celebrate."
Joseph looked oddly at him. "Who said anything about you getting fired? I'm talking about your promotion. Way to go, man. You know, out of all ..."
"Wait. What did you say?" Jon asked. "I got promoted?"
"Well, yeah. Ms. McMillan talked to you, right?"
"Yeah."
"Didn't she tell you that you were promoted? I mean, that's what she told me. They're setting up your new office as we speak."
"I get an office?"
"Yeah. Man, you must be more stunned than I thought."
Jon walked back into his cubicle and sat down in his chair. So he wasn't fired? Could it be that he imagined it all? But it all seemed so real. His mind urged him that it all really did happen.
Slowly, he put his stuff back, until he was left with the stone he had just received. He remembered looking at it after it glowed. Well, allegedly glowed. That could have been his imagination too. Then he thought back to before it glowed and remembered wishing that he wasn't fired.
Wait a minute, Jon thought. Could it be that his wish actually came true? Jon didn't believe in magic, but the proof of its existence was undeniable. He wished that he wasn't fired and the stone glowed, and then he discovered that he wasn't fired (in fact, it was the complete opposite).
He looked down at the stone, wondering if other wishes could come true too.
