Sarah looked up from her desk, as Jon walked into the room. She was a stunningly beautiful woman, but also a bit of a bitch. Jon figured that all corporate women were like that. Maybe it was how they survived in the business world.
"Shut the door, please," she said, standing up.
Jon did as she asked.
"I guess you're wondering why I called you in here," she said, smirking.
Jon didn't say anything.
"You don't have to answer. I'll just make this quick."
Here it comes, Jon thought.
"We're going to have to let you go. Gather your things and be out of the building in fifteen minutes."
And there it was. If Jon said he was surprised, he'd be lying. He was a model employee, yes, but during this damn recession ... well, the company had to make cutbacks. And that meant him.
He slowly walked back to his cubicle with his shoulders slumped. Karyn approached him and was about to ask what happened, but it was already clear. He got fired, just like Jerry, the previous day. She began to worry that maybe she'd be next.
"I'm so sorry, Jon," Karyn said.
"It's okay. It's not like I didn't see this coming."
"Listen, maybe we could go out for a drink later. You need cheering up."
"Okay, yeah. I guess," he said, sitting back down in front of his computer.
Karyn sighed, and then walked away.
Why do I always have such bad luck? he thought.
