"What does happen if you use the shower again?" asked Jeff.
"I'm sorry," said Mr. Carlyle. "Nobody knows that. Once Jon got affected we tried the shower twice on a mouse and it didn't change the mouse back. But we didn't exactly autopsy the mouse or do a detailed study--we just did enough to be sure the shower wouldn't reverse itself, and then we got rid of it."
"Oh, it's harmless, then?"
"We don't know that!" replied Mr. Carlyle. "It could have done lots of things that nobody noticed on a mouse."
As everyone asked questions, Jeff moved towards the magic shower.
"I wish I knew what a second use of shower water does," said Jon, touching the stone in his pocket. Then it came to him. A second dose does indeed have an effect. "No, Jeff!" exclaimed Jon. "If you use that shower again, you'll..."
"I'm not going to use it on myself. I just want to test it. Someone catch another mouse, please?"
"Maybe we should," said Mr. Carlyle.
But they never got around to trying that. Jeff slipped on a bar of soap and went flying the rest of the way towards the shower. He was able to catch himself and didn't get badly hurt--but as he did so he knocked up against the water faucet and the magic shower water sprayed a strong stream directly on himself, as well as splashing it on....
