"I'm Jon," he said. If this girl was a female version of himself and had a room that had some resemblance to his own, he wondered just in what other ways she could be similar. Did she know a Karyn? Either a male version of Karyn (because some people were the opposite sex), or a normal female Karyn (because the Zoe in the picture was not the opposite sex).
"Uh-huh," she said. "I'm Jenna. How did you get into my house?"
"Can you guess?" said Jon.
"Maybe. But I want to hear it from you."
"Okay, but either it also happened to you or you won't believe me."
"Try me."
"Fine. I inherited a magic wishing stone from my grandfather. I wished for something interesting and my door goes to this magic hallway full of doors, that goes on forever." Jenna nodded for him to continue. "I went back in to see that it was still my bedroom. Then I wrote 'MY ROOM' next my own door and then went to a different one a few minutes away. I came out in your room."
"A few minutes away?" said Jenna. "How many doors would that be? Fifty? A hundred?"
"I'd guess around fifty. But nobody would do that if she didn't believe me. You'd say something like 'that's crazy' or 'prove it'. You wouldn't just accept it!"
Jenna laughed. "Of course I believe you. I inherited a magic stone from my grandfather. I wished for something interesting and my door now goes to a magic hallway full of doors. I checked a couple first and then came back to my own room and... here you are. But it's still my room. We did very similar things, but we didn't do exactly the same thing. I spent some time looking in nearby rooms before I returned, and you returned immediately, so we both ran into each other here.
"I see," said Jon. "If you had explored faraway doors instead of nearby doors, and I had explored nearby doors instead of faraway doors, you would have run into me in my room instead."
"And you're the version of me from a world where you're a guy." To Jon's surprise, she hugged him. It felt nice. "I guess I have a new, I don't know, relative? Person I know?"
"Yeah, I guess," said Jon. "Say, do you know someone named Karyn? I don't know if she'd be 'Corwin' or 'Kevin' some other guy's name like that."
Jenna said, "She's Karyn. I accidentally wished for her to have hair and breasts like Sarah. Right after we tested the magic stone by turning a tree branch pink."
"Hmm. That's almost the same, but I turned the branch blue."
"Pink... Blue. Girl... Boy," said Jenna.
"I figured that much out. And Karyn was the one who accidentally wished blonde hair and big boobs on herself, not me on her."
"Is she still your best friend?"
"Yeah."
"But she's a girl and you're not."
"It's possible. We knew each other as kids. Sometimes boys really hate girls when they're kids but it wasn't like that with us. We're not dating if that's what you're thinking. In fact...."
